that was the football side of it. you could say the whole thing was overshadowed. the lights went out. a 34-minute power outage put the whole super bowl on hold. carlos diaz was at the game. he is back in new orleans where the power is back o. what on earth went on? that was one of the most bizarre things we have seen. >> we went from blowout, blackout to shoot-out in just a matter of a few minutes in new orleans. it's a situation where everything post 9/11 happens in a major city like superdome you have to start asking questions. there was no terrorism involved. nothing that way. the crowd never got to be in a panicked state when half of the power went out. when the company that supplies the energy to the superdome said basically it was a power surge.

the system thought there was an abnormality and shut down. equivalent of at your house a power breaker goes off. a breaker broke. and the half of the energy in the stadium goes off. half the power goes off. here's the thing, for those of you watching at home you had no explanation because the power went out on the side of the announcers, jim nance and phil simms for cbs. you could not hear them because the power was out on their side of the stadium as well. so fans were in the dark inside the stadium and all over the world because there was no explanation. what happened was there was a surge -- there was no fire as originally reported. and the players resumed after 34 minutes on of a power outage. >> 34 long minutes. it felt like it was a decisive moment in the game. walk us through some of the other highlights. >> yeah. you know, it was all ravens

before the power outage. you just know the conspiracy theories were gearing up saying the nfl is trying to stave us off of winning the super bowl. it was 28-6 when the power went out. it was all ravens before the power outage. after the power outage, the san francisco 49ers basically made a surge of their own and got back into the game. the game came down to four plays inside the 10 yard line. when it's a second year like collin kaepernick going against one of the best defenses in the league you knew the ravens were going to come out on top. ravens get the win, 34-31 and john harbaugh beats his brother jim. >> i don't know if i agree. i thought there was every reason the 49ers would put it in.

killed and dozens injured when a tour bus struck a pickup truck and rolled over on a treacherous highway in california. this happened in san bernardino, 80 miles south of los angeles. the road is so narrow that rescue workers have had a very difficult time reaching all the victims there. what is the very latest here? >> well, this is what chp is telling us now. there are eight people confirmed dead. but they say they believe that number is going to change. meaning they will find out many more people died in this crash. also, we've had our own count here. about 27 people have been taken to five local hospitals. six are critical. some of those are children. my photographer and i walked up to the crash site about a half mile from here. it is absolutely stunning to see

what happened here. it looks as if this tour bus flipped over at one point. much of it is caved in right above where the driver would sit. we understand people were ejected from the bus. in this crash scene you can clearly tell there are numerous tarps that are concealing bodies and also body parts. that's what's making it so difficult for investigators to try to determine just how many people were killed in this accident. i talked to one first responder off camera. she said it was one of the worst scenes -- probably the worst scene she had seen in 25 years. here's what the chp has to say on camera about this accident. >> it's a terrible scene, horrific scene. there's multiple victims. there's personal belongings, personal property at the scene. >> also, the chp says there was

a ford pickup truck involved and it was carrying a trailer, a work trailer and a saturn sedan. it may be that the bus hit the saturn sedan from behind. while we were up there you can clearly tell that the road was sloped. but this is a pretty straight stretch. it goes to big bear, which is a winter recreation area. it is believed this is from national city from the san diego area and was carrying people from the tijuana area. it would seem logical they were coming back down the hill after enjoying a day in the snow. somewhere along the way this accident happened. >> thank you. investigators in texas are still trying to determine why a 25-year-old iraq war vet allegedly killed former navy s.e.a.l. sniper chris kyle and another man at a gun range in texas over weekend.

eddie ray ralph was arrested on two counts of capital murder. joe, this morning where do things stand with this investigation? >> john, behind me is where eddie ray ralph is being held on $3 million bond. it's still early in the investigation. authorities still trying to figure out what happened at that shooting range and why. >> former navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle who claimed a record 150 kills in iraq died at the hands of another vet, authorities say, allegedly using a semiautomatic handgun. what police don't know yet is why. >> i don't know that we'll ever know. he's the only one that knows that. but at this point he hasn't made any comments to law enforcement as to why he did it. >> they all drove together in a pickup truck, authorities say. less than two hours later, kyle and littlefield were dead. ralph had fled to his sister's

house. he told her what happened. she called police. and ralph was eventually caught. ralph is an iraq war veteran. he left the marines in 2010. kyle, who wrote the best-selling auto biography "american sniper" talked about the duty to those he served with in an interview with kttv last year. >> my only regret are the ones i couldn't save. he started a foundation to help those suffering from ptsd. that may be why kyle and littlefield went to the gun range with ralph. >> mr. kyle works with people suffering from some issues that have been in the military. and this shooter is possibly one of those people that he had taken out to the range to mentor, to visit with, to help him. >> kyle's friend travis cox said that's just the kind of man he

was. >> the man he was when he came home is a servient leader. he was a humble, humble man. he had a vision to support veterans and their needs. and he was fearless in that. and he gave his life doing so. >> the dallas "morning news" reports that jailers used a taser on ralph when he became aggressive with guards. the newspaper also reports he's on suicide watch. it's still not clear this morning why the shooting occurred, john. >> the first place a learned of chris kyle's death was in a tweet from sarah palin. he was very well known. and you actually met him. >> i did. i met him in iowa in 2011. he was with sarah palin there. i talked to him a little bit about the s.e.a.l.s. he was very proud of his

killed all this after a tour bus rolls on a road in california. awful pictures. plus, the night the light went out in. new details on what caused the super bowl power outage. after the light finally started working again, somehow the ravens managed to shut them down at the last minute. some other big winners, the advertisers. destiny's child and of course you can just tell by looking at. >> no lip syncing. very excited about that. >> i was. finally got to see her sing live. i was very excited about that. welcome. i'm john berman. >> and i'm zoraida sambolin. it is monday, 6:00 a.m. in the east. a deadly bus crash on a narrow mountain highway in california leaves eight people dead and dozens more injured. authorities believe the bus first rear ended a sedan,

crashed with a pickup truck pulling a trailer and pulled over. on a treacherous mountain highway 80 miles east of los angeles. the road is so narrow, rescue workers had a difficult time reaching the victims. we want to bring in cnn's paul berkanon. paul, we understand that crews are still trying to recover bodies. >> we walked up the road half mile to the crash site it is shocking, grisly and heartbreaking. right now, california highway patrol is huddling with fish officials and others and trying to get to the body count. they know so far eight people have been killed in the accident. but they say that number is sure to change, meaning they expect far many more people will be determined to have been killed. we know that many people were treated on scene.

we know that 27 people taken to local area hospitals, six of them are critical. children, of course, were hurt in this accident. it happened on a straight part of this road as they came down from the big bear area. and let's listen to what the california highway patrol has to say about the crash. >> it's -- it's a terrible scene. horrific scene. there are multiple victims, you know, there are personal belongings, personal property at the scene. >> and off camera, another veteran of these crashes, someone with the san berard dino fire department says it was the worst seen she has seen in 25 years. they are looking at a possible cause of the crash. one believes there was some sort of mechanical failure and it looks the crash could have been worse, as the bus was right at the edge of what seemed to be a creek. the bus did roll at least once and if it rolled again, who

knows how many more fatalities there could be. >> roads so narrow. the bus was carrying a tour group from tijuana, mexico. >> reporter: the bus was from national city on the san diego side. not uncommon for people in the san diego/tijuana area to do things together. that is yet to be determined. we're checking on the safety record of the bus, and the government of the united states found the last two years, there has been no crashes and this tour line had a satisfactory record. >> paul verkammon, thank you for that. super bowl xlvii, or the night the lights went out in new orleans. the 34-31 victory by the ravens was as dramatic as bizarre. the ravens came this close to blowing a 22-point lead, 49ers

had four shots at a game-winning touchdown. at the end, the game wasn't in doubt until the lights went out. a 34-minute power outage put the super bowl on hold and gave the niners a brand new life. not enough. carlos diaz in new orleans this morning. >> usually you talk about a game being broken down by halves, first half versus second half. this super bowl broken down by prepower outage and post power out age. before the outage, all ravens, they built a lead thanks to jacoby jones 108-yard kickoff return to start the second half. ties an nfl super bowl record for the longest kickoff return in the history of the super bowl. then the power outage happened. 34-minute delay, where the ravens lost momentum. and the 49ers staged an amazing comeback. at one point cutting into the amazing lead and going right

from 28-6 to 31-29. a two-point conversion failed and that's what the ravens needed. a field goal late in the game and then with the niners within the ten-yard line, and first down. the ravens defense stopped the niners on four plays. kept them out of end zone. controversial call on the fourth play. it looks like michael crabtree was grabbed. the referee said no. jim harbaugh said it was definitely a holding and pass interference. ravens pull it out. joe flacco, game nvp. and up for a new carat. he says he's a raven for life. ray lewis ending his 17-year career, with the baltimore ravens going out on top. winning the super bowl after announcing at the beginning of january this would be his final run as a raven and retiring at

the end of the year. and, then, of course, the story two of the harbaughs, john harbaugh coming out on top of his little brother, jim harbaugh. the win was bittersweet. guys. >> the story without a doubt was the power outage. such a giant scandal had the ravens lost. they had the game in hand before the outage. >> that's a really good point. we got a really good game because of the power outage. >> and justice done it's fair to say. >> thank you to carlos diaz covering it all for us. no shortage of big hits in the super dome, but plenty of debate about the biggest hit of all when it comes to multimillion dollar super bowl ads. half a minute is not a lot of time to make an impression. this godaddy.com ad made an impression. >> there is two sides of

and why. former navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle, who claimed a record 150 kills in iraq, died at the hands of another vet authorities say, allegedly using a semi automatic handgun. what police don't know is why. >> i don't know that we'll ever know. he is the only one that knows that. he has not made any comments to law enforcement as to why he did. >> chad littlefield and the suspect, eddie ray ralph, drove to the gun range together in a pickup truck. less than two hours later, kyle and littlefield were dead. ralph had fled to his sister's house and told her what happened. she called police and ralph was eventually caught. ralph is an iraq war veteran, left the marines in 2010. kyle who wrote the best-selling autobiography "american sniper," talked about duty to those he served with in an interview with ktvt last year.

>> the guys i couldn't save, that keeps me up at night. every shot, i felt extremely justified. >> reporter: kyle became a fierce advocate for vets, starting a foundation to help those suffering from ptsd. that may be why kyle and littlefield went to the gun range are ralph. >> he works with people who are suffering from issues who have been in the military and this shooter is possibly one of those people that he had taken out to the range to mentor, to visit with, to help him. >> reporter: kyle's friend, tra travis cox, says that's the kind of man he was. >> i would describe him as a servant leader, he served others, a humble, humble man. he -- he had a vision to support veterans. and their needs, and he was fearless in that. and he gave his life doing so.

game. hey carlos. >> how you doing? basically, cbs missed a gold mine. could are vun commercials for the entire 34--minute delay. what happened last night was intercom, the power company that supplies power to the superdome was an ab normality, a power surge through a breaker and that's why power went out in half the dome. they are still investigating the cause, but if we're being honest about this, it really wasn't that big of a deal inside the superdome. fans didn't throw them off their game it allowed them to refill beers and take a restroom break after beyonce's halftime show. wasn't too much alarm inside the stadium and people watching at home, although confused really took that 34-minute break as a chance to get refreshed. it was a situation where mvp joe

game, but he was the center of attention for the super bowl, announcing before the super bowl he would be retiring. there is controversy around ray lewis. he was involved in a murder 15 years ago. that has basically haunted him for 13 years. did a lot in the nfl to revamp his image and come out on top of this, after the game, he said it was a storybook ending. >> all right, carlos, great to see you. thank you for braving new orleans for us. surviving the game and all the festivities. >> thank you. 34 minutes past the hour. hard to wrap your head around the death of chris kyle. the most lethal sniper in u.s. history, shot and killed far away from the battlefield at a gun range south of ft. worth, texas. his alleged killer, said to be one of the fellow veterans kyle

was trying to help adjust to civilian life. eddie routh is charged of killing kyle and another man on saturday. motive is unknown. kyle is a former navy s.e.a.l. who served four combat tours in iraq. 160 confirmed kills. after retiring, he wrote a best-selling memoir called "american sniper." he counciled other veterans and described frustration with the treatment of the veterans on "inside the team room" this is last year. >> instead of just going to the airport and saying thank you and shaking a hand, take a step farther, why don't you go up, and random act of kindness, show your thanks. you don't have to spend a dime, just your time. >> we have the producer of the series, and you might recognize him from mad tv or one of his many other tfrp v and movie

credits. thank you for being with us. how did you meet chris? and what went through your mind when you found out he had been killed? >> i met chris in april of last year. brandon webb, the creator and editor of sofrep.com wanted to do a roundtable series with navy s.e.a.l.s and bring in chris and he needed help. he needed a moderator and technical help and so he invited me to be part of it, and i was very proud to. so it was during that day, a four-hour long conversation that i got to know chris. we spent the rest of that evening together as well. hanging out. but i asked him some pretty probing questions, and he answered very can at this time -- candidly, which is what brandon was looking for. it was quite an experience. >> he was very committed to

service men and women and the system failing them. what can you tell us about that? >> well, you know, when he was in iraq, a lot of the work he did was called overwatch, as a sniper, he had the high ground, and he had a whole view of the battlefield so he could protect the marines, who were moving below. and i -- i feel like a guardian is a good way to describe chris. he was a guardian of the marines, when he was deployed. and when he came home, he remained a guardian. he was very concerned about the way that veterans and service members were portrayed in the media. he felt like they needed a fair shake, he understood the fog of war and the ambiguities of combat, and he wanted to make sure not only that we gave them the benefit of the doubt, but we

gave them the proper support when they came home. he was very concerned that service members felt discarded when they returned home, and he wanted to facilitate -- help facilitate their transition from war to productive civilian life. and he knew first hand just how difficult that transition could be. >> i want to play a moment of that. a moment in your interview when chris talked about robert bales, accused of killing 16 afghan civilians in march of 2012, american soldier. he urged do not rush to judgment. let's watch it. >> don't be judging our boys over there unless you walked a mile in their shoes and you know what happened to them a week before, an hour before. what put him in that mind-set? did we fail him, or did he fail us? >> right. >> is that something he shared with you? >> yes. and i think it's very poignant,

given the circumstances, that this was a -- a former marine, that he had decided to help. he was picking up the slack where somebody else had dropped the ball in terms of helping this person transition from a wartime mentality to a civilian mentality. and, yeah, i think a lot of people have already rushed to judgment. i think the question did we fail him or did he fail us, is an important question. chris would want that asked any time. >> that's interesting. >> a veteran or service member is accused of doing something terrible. we put people in a situation where they have to see or experience really horrible things and it's very difficult to know what part that had in their behavior. and i think too that christen coura

so we have some good news -- no, let's call it great news. meteorologist indra peterson joins us live from the weather center. what's up? >> so much better, right? finally a break from cold, arctic air. temperatures start to rebound. might be cold throughout the northeast. we'll take what we can get. a couple of days by wednesday, close to the average at 38. this is all going to be part of a pattern change that we've been waiting for. cold, arctic air lifting out of the jet stream to the north. that being the eastern half of the country and on the west coast, we know what that means, cold air dives down, bringing them cold air on their side. so all of this kind of translates into warmer temperatures in the south. warm up there first. notice, well above normal. 70s toward texas.

but that doesn't mean we weon't get a chance for showers. showers in the mississippi valley and ohio valley. clippers kick on through. a few chances for snow. overall, i like the shadings of the whole story. notice the blue and purple and finally warmer temperatures on our side, right? >> thank you very much, indra peterson. let's get you up to date on this morning's top stories. rescue workers on the scene of a deadly bus crash that happened on a narrow mountain highway in southern california. eight people dead, dozens more injured after a tour bus rear ended a sedan, crashed into a pickup truck and rolled over. this happened 80 miles east of los angeles. children involved also in the crash. the president travels to minneapolis today, promoting his 35-point plan to battle gun violence. he'll meet with political leaders before speaking this afternoon. it's scheduled for 2:30 eastern.

with my mother. >> steve tanenbaum created the ad. $4 million for a 30-second spot, they better be good. what were you shooting for? >> second year in the bowl, and last year we came out with ce b celebri celebrities, so the first year -- the thing about the super bowl that i found is you kind of have to -- as a brand, you have to find your voice. and you want to make something that stands out, but you don't want to make something so unrecognizable that it doesn't feel like you. so the first year in we said we want to make the stamp, we want to say we're here and we want to -- we're here to play hard, so we used celebrities, and the second year i feel like we made something closer to the century 21 brand voice, which is all about being there when people need them. so this is about life stages, so getting married, your kids are moving out. you're having a baby, and those
